Winners Recognized for Business Excellence

SOBA 2021 Gala Night recognized the 2021 Star Outstanding Business Awards (SOBA) winners as the cream of the local unlisted business community.

The country’s top private companies demonstrated their mettle by being named SOBA winners, another achievement to be proud of.

In addition to receiving the distinctive SOBA trophies, winning the 2021 SOBA Gala Night meant they joined the ranks of successful SOBA alumni, some of whom have grown by leaps and bounds since receiving their outstanding recognition for business success and growth.

Since its inception in 2010, SOBA has recognized more than 300 meritorious local unlisted companies that have excelled in their fields.

Guest of honor at the gala night was Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy), alongside Star Media Group Bhd (SMG) Group Chief Executive Officer Alex Yeow, RHB Bank Bhd Group Chief Marketing Officer Abdul Sani Abdul Murad, PKT Logistics Group Sdn Bhd Group Chief Executive and Managing Director Datuk Seri Dr. Michael Tio, Credit Guarantee Corp Malaysia Bhd (CGC) President and CEO Datuk Mohd Zamree Mohd Ishak, Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) Deputy CEO (Exporter Development) Abu Bakar Yusof and Maxis Business Head of SME Kevin Lee. Among the winners was Christina Tee Kim Chin, the Founder and CEO of Cape EMS Manufacturing (M) Sdn Bhd, who won the Meritorious Achievement in the Female Entrepreneur of the Year category (over RM25 million in annual sales).

Cape EMS is a Johor-based provider of Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) and precision machining services.

“I am very proud of this award. I have been in this (business) industry for 35 years.

“Our products are 100% exported, mainly to the US market, and customers include Mimosa (technology leader in wireless broadband solutions) and Eureka (vacuum cleaners),” Tee said.

Regarding the near-term business outlook, she said that the EMS industry is showing robust growth and “we are very fortunate to be in this industry”.

Tee added that the group’s business philosophy revolves around its employees and stakeholders as “only humans can create miracles”.

She noted that the group will continue to improve its environmental, social and governance practices.

On the other hand, Tan Chee Jia from Syarikat Elektrik Siang Sdn Bhd (SESSB) won the Par Excellence Achievement in the category “Young Entrepreneur of the Year” (over RM 25 million annual turnover).

Established more than 40 years ago, SESSB has grown from a small white goods retail store in Nibong Tebal, Penang to 16 retail stores across the northern region and Terengganu.

“I am a second-generation entrepreneur and have been in this field for 13 years. We continue to think outside the box and now all of our stores have their own Facebook pages that they manage themselves,” Tan said.

He added that by the end of 2022, SESSB hopes to have expanded its network to 30 retail stores.

“We are already examining new locations in Terengganu.

“We also educate young people to become entrepreneurs; Therefore, we have training programs for our employees to help them advance in their careers,” Tan said.

Natasha Mah, Head of Growth at Wide Tropism Trading Sdn Bhd, won the Par Excellence Achievement in the Female Entrepreneur of the Year category (up to RM25M Annual Revenue).

Based in Batu Caves, Selangor, Wide Tropism is an importer and exporter of Nuts, Beans, Seeds, Raisins, Dried Spices, Spices, Commodities, Snacks and Organic Products.

The company supplies organic and natural retail products to more than 1,000 outlets across Malaysia and is best known for its organic Love Earth brand.

In addition, Wide Tropism also provides repackaging, original equipment manufacturing and brand distribution services to business partners.

“We want to educate people about healthy eating. Our vision and mission is that every home should have our products,” said Mah.

She pointed out that with Love Earth the company wants to offer the lowest possible costs and at the same time the best quality for organic products.

“In any case, our quality comes first. We have a no-pesticides, no-preservatives policy,” Mah said.

To allay consumers’ doubts about the authenticity of organic products, Mah said the company has a “transparent policy where its products have traceability.”

“This allows us to understand where the products are coming from – from which supplier, from which country and where they are packaged.

“We want the traceability of the product to inspire confidence,” she said.

Regarding the company’s near-term plans, Mah said that in addition to further business expansion in Malaysia, it is also looking at overseas markets, particularly in Asia.

Meanwhile, Datuk Dylan Chui Saig Herg of Delux Structural Works Sdn Bhd won the Par Excellence award in the Male Entrepreneur of the Year category (up to RM25M Annual Sales).

Chui is the Founder and Chairman of Delux Holdings (M) Sdn Bhd which manufactures and offers uniquely designed Trackless Automatic Gate Systems, Aluminum Folding Gates, Security Screen Doors and Roofing Systems.

Known as the leading manufacturer of automatic gates in Southeast Asia, the group is based in Puchong, Selangor and invests heavily in R&D.

Its products adorn homes in Malaysia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Singapore and Thailand.

“Customer satisfaction is crucial for us. We want our products to provide the right solutions for our customers,” Chui said of his business philosophy.

Referring to the challenges, he noted that in the manufacturing industry, the group has had to “enough the movement restrictions linked to Covid-19” over the past two years.

Chui said the group plans to list the largest showroom in Malaysia for its products and targets in the ACE market by 2025.
