IPC and Apple develop new standard for green cleaners

BANNOCKBURN, Illinois, USA, Sep 30, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – IPC, Apple and other international companies are developing a new standard, IPC-1402, Standard for environmentally friendly cleaners used in electronics manufacturingwhich aims to define the criteria for what an environmentally friendly cleaner for electronics manufacturing is, and in particular applies to cleaners used in the manufacture of electronic assemblies, components and materials, including chemicals used directly to clean components, housings and materials or to clean the manufacturing machines during operation and maintenance.

“We are excited to bring together industry experts to begin development of this standard,” said Matt Kelly, chief technologist at IPC. “This is an important step forward in building a sustainable electronics manufacturing ecosystem. IPC-1402 helps engineers make informed decisions and select detergents that are safer for both manufacturing workers and the environment. The standard documents the strict criteria for preferred cleaning agents and takes into account the requirements for industrial hygiene. The use of IPC-1402 will allow important health and safety requirements to be added to the technical drawings required for product assembly. “

The IPC-1402 Development Subcommittee, the Green Cleaners in Manufacturing Task Group, chaired by Apple employees and co-chaired by Zestron, Inc., includes representatives from more than 20 international companies and government agencies.

“We put people first in everything we do, and we pride ourselves on being the industry leader in responsible use of cleaning products,” said Kathleen Shaver, Apple’s director of environmental and supply chain innovation. “We are excited to be working with partners on this new standard that will help accelerate the adoption of safer materials and improve cleaning practices across all industries.”

IPC-1402 is expected to be available in February 2022.
